Surely you do have the critical thinking skills to realize that a statement isn't true just because it appears in a Newspaper right? Honestly you are even worse than the Witnesses that you accuse of lacking critical thinking ability.

So how exactly can a study article be "members-only" when any random person can just walk in off the street on Sunday and get a free copy of the article for the meeting? It is not "members-only" at all, it is "meeting only." You can go through the study articles all you want (and heck even comment on it), you just have to come to the actual place where it is being studied and discussed.

Quite a few elders have known that Teary uses the pen name "Oberon." But they really couldn't have cared less about it, because Teary told them the ACTUAL origin of it (which is not pagan at all).

How Have you Counted your time for Pioneering?

just woundering how have you counted your time in field service especially if you were pioneering?.

would like to see if any of you were on the same page as i was.

with so much to do, like reading all the watchtower and awake each month and the bible reading each week.

Wow...the dishonesty from many of these posters is really just astonishing. I personally would never hire any of you guys to my business.

Just because you don't agree with the theological reasons behind a practice, that doesn't give you an excuse to lie and exagerate. God would certainly hate you lying and exagerating far more than he would you just handing in a simple record of your activities. If you pledge to do pioneer hours, then keep your word and do pioneer hours. If you only did 1 hour of preaching, then be honest and say you only did 1 hour. If you did no preaching at all, then be honest and say you did no preaching. If you did preach but just don't feel like giving anybody your record, then just be honest and say that you don't want to keep service records. It might raise some eyebrows but still, it is HONEST.

Also reminds Teary of his dear old grandfather (RIP). When I got done with his ranch chores for the day, my grandfather would ask him straight up: "how much did you work today?" Now I did not bull**** him like some people on this thread certainly would by including stupid things like: time to wake up; time to brush teeth; time to eat breakfast; time to shower; nap time; ect. No, I told him that I would work, we both understood what work meant, and so I told him exactly how much time I spent working (even if it wasn't that much).

Teary always finds that annoying too. People that speak in the third person just seem totally whacko if you ask Teary.

What Teary links to is directly related to the original post of this thread. It also saves space on the thread by allowing Teary to post his thousands of words there instead of here.

Of course Teary understands that, it is just that he hasn't seen any examples of "hate speech" from the Witnesses yet. But if you consider the Bible and Paul calling apostates "mentally diseased" hate speech, then that is your choice.

the movie is about a "jewish" boy who goes off to a wasp college, but hides his jewish background from his friends and girlfriend.

he becomes very popular and accepted by them, until his friends find out he is jewish.

Who is reading between lines? Teary is just asking some perfectly logical questions of you:

1. If it is good to hide and be ashamed of a JW background, then is it also good to hide and be ashamed of a Jewish background (since you used both in your comparison)?

2. Can you really consider people to be worthwhile friends if they abandon you based on past religious affiliation that you don't even practice anymore?

3. How do you know that they kicked you out based on your past religious affiliation alone? Maybe the just plain didn't like you, or maybe you yourself did something to cause them to not like you anymore and kick you out?

The title of this thread is:

"Vehicle for Vitriol and REALLY crazy statements"

And yet what labels does the creator use in his very first sentence?

"weird," "hateful," "cultish," "washtowels"

Remember the ancient proverb: don't cut off your nose to spite your face, i.e., don't go around accusing others of being hateful but then act twice as hateful yourself in making the accusations.

1. Since you set up the comparison, are you implying that the Jewish boy should have also been ashamed of his Jewish background and hidden it from everybody?

2. If you have a JW background but don't in any way act like a JW anymore, and if you had already built up friends before it got out that you used to be a JW, then it sounds to Teary like you just had really crappy and judgmental friends that you were better off without. Either that, or they voted you out for reasons other than your JW background and you are just using it now as a way to justify your rejection, i.e., scapegoating.

And yet the danger of laws like that is: "who gets to decide what is acceptable speech and what isn't? Who do you give the power to?"

That is one of the reasons why the Americans adopted the 1st amendment in their constitution in the first place, because giving any single person or group of persons power like that will inevitably lead to abuse and supression.
